Chinese WOTD – 咱们

cwotd4

咱们 → Zán Men → We

One of the first words introduced was actually this. It confused me when I realised what the meaning was. I know 我们 (wǒ men) meant the same thing, hence I asked the teacher. From the series of new words I’ve been specifically taught, I really thought this was very unique based on the teacher’s answer, which was that 咱们 cannot be used in sentences not involving the listener.

Being in a new country, bonding would probably be a main objective for me, and hence this word reflects on the need to becoming inclusive and social. I’ll be sure to try use this word as often as possible around others.
